ATMOSFAR Early Access: content now, performance still open

ATMOSFAR launches into Early Access with its flying base and four-player co-op pitch intact, but the complete adventure is still ahead of it. Apog Labs lists two regions, three Wasps and the Cloud Cruiser in the current version. The story ending, another region and the Scout Wasp belong to the roadmap. That is the first distinction to make before buying. Then comes performance. A launch hotfix is not an all-clear.

The game entered Steam Early Access on October 29. At our October 29 check, the US store advertised $22.49, reduced from $24.99 until November 12. This is reported buyer analysis, not a hands-on review. We have not played ATMOSFAR, benchmarked it or tested the hotfix.

A mobile base gives the survival pitch a purpose

The central idea is more specific than gathering resources in another open world. Small flying craft called Wasps handle different jobs, while the Cloud Cruiser carries your base between floating islands. The current store describes the Utility Wasp’s portable camp, the Hauler’s ability to lift heavy scrap and the Striker’s ability to stun enemies. It also describes maintaining, fueling and upgrading those craft.

That division of labor is the interesting part of the proposal. A movable base could make an expedition a question of what to bring and where to park, rather than simply how far to walk from a fixed home. For a co-op group, operating the shared cruiser and choosing craft could give different people useful jobs. Those are reasons to follow the design, not findings that its resource loop or teamwork already works well.

Steam advertises solo play and co-op for up to four people. That gives you the advertised group size, not a tested connection. If your decision depends on reliable sessions with three friends, the store’s mode labels cannot answer that question on their own.

Buy the available content, not the finished roadmap

The Early Access FAQ is clearer about scope than the broader promotional pitch. It lists two distinct regions, three Wasps and a fully fledged Cloud Cruiser for the initial release. The Rime is planned as the third and final region, alongside the Scout Wasp, significantly expanded cruiser building and an ending to the story.

This matters because the older press kit includes Scout in its feature list. For a buying decision, the current Early Access breakdown takes priority. The official images accompanying this article are promotional illustrations supplied through that kit, not our captures or proof of the exact content in EA 1.0-4.

Apog expects at least nine months in Early Access and says that period could extend. It also aims to preserve saves throughout development. An aim is not a guarantee that your launch save will survive every update. Anyone buying chiefly for a completed story, a particular planned craft or assured long-term save continuity should keep those conditions attached to the purchase.

The developer also intends a price increase before full release. That does not give us a confirmed future price or a reason to treat the introductory discount as a deadline for making an uncertain purchase.

What the first hotfix does, and what it does not prove

EA 1.0-4 temporarily disables DLAA settings because of an inefficient rendering effect, addresses a rare delay when closing the bug-reporting panel and changes tutorial respawn locations on Pearl Island. In the same announcement, Apog acknowledges reports of lackluster performance and asks players for hardware specifications, graphics settings and upscaling details.

That request is useful evidence of an active investigation. It is not evidence that all affected systems now run well, or that DLAA explains every complaint. Nor should DLAA and frame generation be treated as the same issue simply because both appear in launch discussion.

One Steam thread illustrates why hardware anecdotes need care. MERDOVSKI reports a frame-generation problem on a 5070 Ti/9800X3D configuration; Personal Responsibility reports no issue with a 4070 Super. These are selected, unverified self-reports from different setups, not a controlled comparison. They support checking the exact configuration and settings behind a claim, not declaring either universal failure or universal compatibility.

At 23:16 UTC on October 29, the US store displayed “Mixed” reviews, with 57% of 90 reviews positive. That is a small, changing launch sample. It does not tell us how much any hotfix changed performance or which concern explains each review. A separate feedback thread even corrects its original storage-crafting complaint, a good reason not to turn every early criticism into a confirmed missing feature.

What to check before joining the crew

Apog distinguishes its experimental branch from the default release: experimental changes may be unstable and graduate to the default branch later. A promising experimental note is therefore not automatically a shipped fix. For bugs, the studio identifies the in-game reporting tool as its reliable route for reaching developers.

Our SULFUR buyer analysis also separates progression and purchase conditions from a game’s broad pitch; more reporting sits in the indie games archive. For ATMOSFAR, the practical dividing line is whether you want to participate in an unfinished aerial-survival project now. If a complete campaign, guaranteed saves or demonstrated performance is essential, the roadmap and first hotfix do not yet supply those assurances.
