Xbox’s XP division groups entertainment and franchise work outside games, with Kayleen Walters announced as president. The linked October 8 memo named Maria Angelidou-Smith as Mojang and Minecraft CEO with an October 19 start date. That announced date has now passed. We rechecked the original sources on October 21; they explain the appointments, not independent confirmation of the actual handoff or a new Minecraft update.
This is a change in who leads those activities and how Xbox organizes them. It is not an announced Xbox subscription, a Minecraft update or a new game-development studio. A franchise-partnership division is not the same thing as a product someone can buy or play.
Four responsibilities, not four new products
Matthew Ball’s Xbox Wire announcement says XP brings together capabilities that already existed across Xbox. The published employee memo signed by Asha spells out four areas. Its XP name refers to Experience Points, but the announcement is about an organization, not a new progression system.
| Area | Announced responsibility |
|---|---|
| Pictures | Film and television adaptations, described as linear content |
| Products | Licensing and merchandise |
| Places | Broadcast and in-person events, theme parks and location-based experiences |
| Partnerships | Work with sponsors, brand partners and creators |
These are categories of work, not a slate of newly approved productions. Naming Pictures does not announce another Minecraft film; naming Places does not establish a venue, opening date or ticket price. The memo identifies what the division is responsible for without supplying those project-level terms.
Ball presents XP as a way to coordinate work with partners while keeping games at the center. That is Xbox’s stated purpose, not evidence that the reorganization has already improved the games. The posts do not give a budget, staffing allocation or development-resource transfer with which to assess that outcome.

The Mojang handoff has a different date
The employee memo announced Walters’ move from Mojang to president of XP and set Angelidou-Smith’s start as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft for Monday, October 19. It said both appointees would report to its author, Asha. Those are the dated appointment terms, not reporting from inside either organization.
Those appointments belong in one report because Xbox announced them together. They should not be collapsed into a claim that Minecraft has become an XP product or that its development teams have moved into the entertainment division. The memo describes a leadership handoff alongside XP’s creation, not a new ownership or gameplay arrangement.
The memo described learning from teams and communities as Angelidou-Smith’s first priority. That is an announced intention, not an account of work completed since the scheduled start. It supplies no Minecraft feature roadmap, release schedule or future monetization promise.

XP is not being presented as a production company
In GamesBeat’s report, Dean Takahashi reports an Xbox clarification: XP is not a production company, and its approach centers on selecting partners. That is a company response reported by GamesBeat, not an interview conducted for this article.
That clarification puts Pictures in perspective. Responsibility for film and television partnerships is not the same as announcing an internal film studio that will make those projects itself. Similarly, a merchandise remit does not establish a new retail offer, and a creator-partnership remit does not settle the terms of a particular sponsorship.
This distinction also limits the player-facing headline. Neither official post announces a change to Game Pass access, Minecraft account requirements, Java or Bedrock policy, mods or server rules. That absence is not a guarantee that policies can never change. It means this announcement is not evidence for such a change now.
What to follow after the organization chart
The scheduled leadership date is past; the useful next evidence is what the appointees actually do. For XP, follow-ups should name partners and projects, then establish availability and terms. The four-part remit explains which work Xbox is grouping together, not what a player should spend money on.
