Virtue and a Sledgehammer has a companion story before its planned October 27 Steam launch. In an October 22 announcement, Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour describe Virtue: Prologue as free short interactive fiction by Juno Menager. It introduces characters and themes from the main game. It is separate from the playable Steam demo.
That distinction is useful if you want a look at the game before buying. There are three things to follow: a companion novella, a demo of the main game’s opening area, and the full release still listed as coming soon. They answer different questions.
The prologue is the story route
The developer announcement places the novella before the car crash that opens the main game. Its coming-of-age scenes include first love and time with the protagonist’s sister. The developers commissioned Menager to expand the characters they had created, rather than simply repackaging the Steam demo.
They link to Virtue: Prologue on Pantaloon’s Playbill and describe it as free. We could not verify the current access flow, so this is not a promise of account-free browser play or a download guide. We have not played the novella or the main game, and are not judging either here.
The demo is the gameplay route
If your question is how the hammer actually handles, the Steam listing has a separate demo. The September release-date announcement says it includes the first area of the game. Choose that to sample the playable opening. The companion fiction is not a substitute for a gameplay trial.
The main premise is returning to a hometown populated by android versions of former neighbours, then tearing through its buildings while uncovering memories. Publisher Devolver’s announcement describes destruction alongside interactive-fiction sequences. The promotional images show that main game, not the separate prologue.

What October 27 does, and does not, settle
At our October 25 check, Steam still listed the full game for October 27, 2026, with Windows support and Devolver Digital as publisher. The US metadata supplied no price. A planned date is not confirmation that the game has unlocked, and we have not verified an exact release time or demo-save transfer.
Our RetroSpace snapshot makes the same broader distinction between an advertised proposition and a tested verdict; our indie coverage follows upcoming releases. For Virtue, the immediate choice is simpler: the novella introduces its people, the Steam demo samples the opening, and the full game’s price and availability still need a launch-day check.
