The Danes passes €800k: read the rules before choosing a box

The Danes has real crowdfunding attention, but the useful buying question is simpler: do you want a new Viking game, or more material for the one you own? Feuerland’s project is a standalone game in the world of A Feast for Odin, not a box that requires the original to play.

Gamefound’s homepage snapshot observed on November 1 listed €808,982 for the campaign. That is evidence of pledging interest, not delivered sales or a quality verdict. The amount can change; check the campaign itself for the current total and remaining time.

Read the rules before counting the extras

The English rules currently available from co-designer Gernot Köpke describe an eight-round standard game for two to four players. A shorter six-round version and solo rules are handled separately. Crucially, the shorter game is described as an option for people already familiar with the game, rather than a beginner mode.

That distinction matters if you are looking at this because you enjoy smaller Viking-themed games. The setup already involves a multipart action board, goods boxes, a round track and separate Kaupang booklets. A Kaupang is not just a decorative destination: these locations have their own material and reference information.

The action board also changes sides according to player count. The rulebook’s setup tells players to draw a number of setup action tiles equal to the number of players plus one, then add those to the board. Before buying, look at a complete setup and decide whether your regular group wants that amount of preparation and reference material.

This is a rules-based buying observation, not a claim about how smoothly the finished game plays. GameGuideDog has not played The Danes.

What crowdfunding adds beyond retail

Feuerland’s October 12 update names printed wooden Viking meeples and a 16-page historical almanac as crowdfunding perks not included in the retail edition. It also says accessories might be sold separately. Those are specific edition differences, not a reason to assume that the entire game disappears after the campaign.

A bonus building was offered to people who followed before launch. A reader arriving today should not assume that historical follower condition still makes them eligible.

In its published campaign answers, Feuerland says a retail release is planned and describes storage trays for goods and boxes for other components. Retail availability, final production details and delivery remain things to verify, not benefits to infer from the size of the funding total.

Check the language and delivered cost

Feuerland’s own preview notice says backers can choose German or English editions during the campaign. That statement does not establish a Polish-language pledge. If Polish rules and cards are important to your group, wait for a concrete localized product listing rather than treating a translated article as edition confirmation.

Check the selected reward, shipping, taxes and current delivery estimate before paying. This guide does not verify a delivered price or guarantee a fulfillment date.

The useful checkpoint is the rulebook, not the funding counter. Newcomers should check the full setup first; existing Odin owners should identify the new systems they actually want before choosing another substantial box.
