Ordinary Magic: what Bookshop Deluxe adds beyond retail

3 min read

Ordinary Magic’s latest Bookshop extras change more than the materials in the box. Unstable Games’ October 27 update adds Interns and new bonus tokens to The Curious Little Bookshop Deluxe Edition, automatically. They will not be in the standard retail game.

That is worth separating from the crowdfunding total. Gamefound’s homepage snapshot observed on October 31 listed $556,943 for Ordinary Magic. It is a dated funding figure for the wider project, not a live counter, delivered sales or evidence that the games are good.

What the Bookshop extras actually change

Each player gets an Intern with an additional endgame scoring objective. Three new types of bonus token also alter the decision about completing a shelf: two let you manipulate books already placed, while the third costs points at the end.

This builds on a competitive game about bidding with Influence and arranging books around hidden genre and color preferences. The October 28 update also adds chipboard player shields to Deluxe copies, with slots designed to accommodate sleeved Staff ID, Agenda and Intern cards.

The gameplay extras and the component upgrade are different reasons to pledge. Neither proves better balance. The publisher plans print-and-play expansion content after the campaign and says it may later release a standalone expansion. Calling that gameplay permanently inaccessible outside crowdfunding would be misleading.

Pick the game before the bundle

Ordinary Magic contains three standalone games. The Curious Little Bookshop is competitive for two to five players; Lifted Spirits is a competitive drafting and hand-management game for two to four. Happy Heart Cafe is cooperative for one to four, with solo play confirmed in the campaign FAQ.

The campaign lists $29 for an individual Deluxe game and $79 for the three-game bundle. Those are listed pledge amounts, not verified delivered totals. Check the current reward contents, shipping, taxes and fulfillment estimate before paying; a bundle is only useful if its games fit your table.

The FAQ says all three campaign games are in English. Planned community translation resources for Bookshop and Lifted Spirits do not establish a Polish boxed edition.

GameGuideDog has not played these games. This is a reported buyer guide, not a review. The useful comparison is the game you want, the extra rules you would use and the delivered cost, not the size of the collector package.
