Existing digital owners of Minecraft on Switch can get the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition free in most territories through January 31, 2027, according to the new official preorder terms. Japan and Taiwan have small specified charges. If you already qualify, check your Nintendo eShop offer before paying the public price for another copy.

Preorders opened October 7 for the version scheduled to release October 27. The useful new information is the upgrade’s eligibility and deadline, not a newly announced release date. Physical Switch ownership is not covered by the verified offer wording, and we have not tested an account-specific redemption.

The public price and the owner offer are different

At the October 7 check, Nintendo’s US Standard listing displayed a regular price of $29.99 and a Pre-order button. Its publisher notice separately addresses existing digital Switch owners and specifies January 31, 2027 for the free Standard offer or discounted collection upgrades.

Those are not conflicting prices. One is a public US listing; the other depends on ownership and territory. Mojang says the limited offer is available only through Nintendo eShop. Do not assume a normal product-page price tells you whether your account qualifies.

Mojang’s October 7 explanation names the exceptions: 100 JPY in Japan and 30 NTD in Taiwan for the Standard upgrade. These are published terms, not our regional checkout results. No exact cutoff hour or after-deadline price is established here.

Nintendo’s announcement has inconsistent ownership wording in its upgrade lead. Its footnote, Mojang’s body text and the live store notification identify existing digital Switch owners. That clarified wording is the basis for this article, not the mistaken implication that you must already own the Switch 2 version.

A cartridge is not a verified eligibility route

The sources explicitly describe digital ownership. They do not establish a cartridge-based redemption procedure. That does not prove that every possible physical-owner route is permanently ruled out; it means a physical copy should not be treated as evidence that this particular offer applies.

Nor have we verified whether buying the older digital version now would create an entitlement. The practical step for an existing owner is to inspect the account offer, not buy a legacy copy speculatively or assume another person’s eligibility carries over.

Two named Reddit reactions highlight the stakes without measuring broad sentiment. Big-daddy-Carlo questions the time limit, while PokeHearts objects to the apparent digital-only eligibility. They are selected individual responses retained October 7, not a poll, tested redemption history or evidence of Microsoft’s motives.

Collection extras do not settle the upgrade bill

Mojang also offers discounted upgrades to Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection, but the verified material does not provide their numerical owner-upgrade fees. Compare the actual offer rather than assume the discount makes either collection the best purchase.

Deluxe adds Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O’Blocks, three Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate adds Decocraft and Weapons + Tools to those add-ons, with five Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins. All editions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.

There is a spending boundary worth checking: Mojang says included Minecoins and Minecoins purchased in Minecraft on a Nintendo device must be used within the Nintendo ecosystem. Do not count those coins as a portable credit balance for another platform.

Visuals and world carryover still have limits

The product advertises Vibrant Visuals, but its footnote excludes split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content. For a household mainly playing on one screen together, that caveat matters more than an unrestricted graphics-upgrade promise.

The publisher also says Switch worlds can carry over. This is an attributed feature claim, not a transfer procedure we have followed or a successful test of a particular save. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft Account; online multiplayer requires Nintendo Switch Online, sold separately.

The next decision is straightforward: establish ownership and region, check the account-specific Standard offer, then compare any collection fee with the extras you actually want. The January deadline makes that check timely; it does not turn an untested upgrade into a performance recommendation.
