Play For Keeps has turned a quiet reprint story into one of the cleaner tabletop crowdfunding watches of the week. Its Kickstarter for new editions of Mexica, Bridges of Shangri-La, Gheos, and Reel Rivals launched on August 4, runs through August 25, and was already funded when I checked the trackers on August 6.
This is not a review call. It is a market-attention call. The interesting part is the bundle: four euro-style titles with older hobby credibility, one small publisher trying to revive them together, and a campaign that has moved past the basic “will this fund?” question while there are still nearly three weeks left on the clock.
The funding signal is real enough to watch
The tracker picture is modest compared with the giant licensed campaigns, but it is clean. Kicktraq listed the project as active, showed a £12,250 goal, had funding around £25K, and put the campaign at roughly double its target with about 370 backers. BackerKit’s BackerTracker showed the same basic shape: funded, in progress, around £25K raised, about 370 backers, and an August 4 to August 25 campaign duration.
That makes the campaign worth watching without overselling it. The numbers say early tabletop buyers are showing up. They do not say the new editions are mandatory, that every old fan will prefer the new production, or that the final component execution is settled. This is still crowdfunding.
Why this bundle has a better hook than a normal reprint
The four-game grouping is doing a lot of the work. Mexica has the sharpest name recognition: UK Games Expo’s listing describes it as a game about building Tenochtitlan with districts, canals, bridges, and temples, from Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer. That gives the campaign an immediate classic-euro anchor.
Bridges of Shangri-La is the tighter hobby pull, an area-control design from Leo Colovini about competing for dominance across mountain villages and seven disciplines. Gheos brings the god-view twist: players reshape an archipelago, back tribes, and try to profit from civilizations rising and falling. Reel Rivals rounds out the pitch with a smaller tile-laying fight over fishing spots from Wolfgang Kramer.
Together, that reads less like a random nostalgia dump and more like a curated area-control and tile-placement shelf refresh. Play For Keeps’ official news page frames the project as “beautiful new editions” of long-lost board-game gems, and Meeple Mountain has the campaign in its current crowdfunding roundup as an August project ending on August 25.
The buyer question is about curation, not just price
The best case is clear: players who missed these titles the first time get a clean way to buy them without hunting old copies, and fans of classic euro tension can treat the campaign as a mini line rather than a one-off reprint. Bundling four related revivals also gives Play For Keeps a stronger identity than simply putting one old name back into circulation.
The caution is also clear. A four-game campaign asks backers to trust the publisher’s taste, production planning, and restoration judgment across several boxes at once. Reprints live or die on details: rulebook clarity, component choices, graphic redesign, box size, price, shipping, and whether the new edition preserves the friction that made the old game interesting instead of smoothing it flat.
That is why this belongs on the board-games radar today. The campaign has real early funding, independent tracker visibility, a current crowdfunding-list placement, and a credible design hook. It is also still early enough that the useful reader question is practical: if you care about classic euro-style area control and tile laying, is this the campaign to watch before the August 25 deadline?
