Metro Redux upgrade: check modes and saves before returning

Metro Redux’s free current-console update is here, but returning players should check the platform notes before pressing install. The important details are not the texture upgrades. Xbox’s 120fps option is explicitly limited to Series X, the Microsoft Store upgrade does not carry saves over, and PC owners have named legacy branches to consider if the new requirements exclude their machine.

4A Games and Deep Silver announced the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S rollout on October 29, following the PC update on October 22. Regional availability can vary. This is reported returner analysis, not our review or a benchmark: we have not installed the upgrade, tested an old save or verified a purchase entitlement.

Start with the mode your hardware supports

The full publisher notes list native support for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with true 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps on compatible displays. PS5 Pro also gets PSSR support. Those are advertised modes, not measurements of sustained frame rates.

The Xbox wording needs more care. The heading covers Series X|S, but the 120fps bullet specifically names Xbox Series X and requires compatible display hardware. Do not read the broad family name as a Series S 120fps promise. We are not assigning Series S a resolution or performance target that the platform-specific evidence here does not settle.

That matters when deciding whether to return. A player with suitable Series X hardware can investigate the high-refresh option; someone on different hardware should check their actual settings rather than assume the headline specification applies. An upscaled 4K mode is also not the same claim as native 4K rendering.

The save warning is specific, and consequential

The publisher’s migration warning is headed Microsoft Store version only. It says saves will not carry over to the upgraded version and recommends a new game. Chapter select will be unlocked, allowing a chapter restart with default equipment.

Chapter access is not a restored personal playthrough. If your reason for returning is to finish a particular inventory or achievement run, default equipment may not preserve what you wanted to continue. Read that warning before treating a free update as a frictionless continuation.

The scope matters. This statement does not establish that every Steam save is lost, that console saves migrate safely, or that all storefronts behave alike. Our sources do not support a universal migration verdict. Keep a backup of progress you care about where your platform permits it; that is a precaution, not a tested recovery procedure.

PC owners have a rollback route to check

The October 22 developer notes name legacy branches for Steam and GOG: metro_2033_redux_legacy and metro_last_light_redux_legacy. They are offered for PCs that do not meet the updated specifications. That is useful information for an existing owner whose older setup ran the previous release.

It is not a guarantee that swapping versions restores every save or achievement state. We have not tested the branches or compatibility between them. Establish which version you need before making a new playthrough dependent on a rollback assumption.

The PC release also already has a follow-up. The October 23 hotfix lists fixes for resolution detection, a disappearing Steam Overlay, the Deep Silver comic reward, Epic achievements and Ukrainian localization. An older report of missing display resolutions should be read alongside that later repair claim, not silently presented as proof of today’s build.

Conversely, a developer saying a problem is fixed is not independent confirmation that every affected machine is now working. The notes identify what changed. They do not replace a check on your own hardware.

Free for owners does not answer every buying question

Today’s publisher announcement says existing owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux can upgrade without charge. It also lists the update as available on PC through Steam, Windows, Epic and GOG. The Xbox platform notes advertise Play Anywhere support.

That still does not verify which older store SKU grants a new Windows entitlement, or how a particular disc copy upgrades. We have not tested checkout or ownership recognition. Do not buy an old bundle solely on the assumption that a general Play Anywhere announcement proves the entitlement attached to that exact listing. Confirm the product and supported devices first.

For an owner, the order is straightforward: identify the game and storefront, read the applicable save warning, then choose a supported mode or investigate the legacy branch. The update is a reason to revisit Redux, not evidence that every old setup and playthrough transfers unchanged.
