Helldivers 2 has a loud August comeback pitch, but the smartest read is still messy re-entry

Helldivers 2 has a fresh August hook on three fronts at once: easier PS5 access, a free live update, and another premium Warbond asking for Super Credits.

Helldivers 2 has the kind of August package that can pull old players back in fast. On Sunday, August 16, 2026, the official version of the story was still loud from every angle: PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members can sample the game on PS5, Devoid of Liberty is live, and the Helldivers 2 x Warhammer 40,000: Castellan’s Creed Legendary Warbond is already folded into the same push.

Steam’s side of the picture still says the interest is real. The official review summary was sitting at 1,155,187 total user reviews, and Steam’s official current-player endpoint returned 92,164 players in-game at check time. That does not prove PlayStation Plus caused the spike by itself. It does prove Helldivers 2 is back in a high-noise, high-visibility moment again.

The useful question is not whether the comeback is perfect. It obviously is not. The useful question is simpler: is this finally a smart re-entry point if you bounced off before, or if you never bought in at all?

The access pitch is stronger than the victory-lap talk

Sony’s official August 12 package matters because it removes one friction point right away. If you already pay for PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium, Helldivers 2 is no longer a full-price gamble on PS5. That changes the equation more than another cosmetic beat ever could.

It also arrives with enough free update material to feel like more than a service-library add. PlayStation’s Devoid of Liberty post says the update adds Void reconnaissance, new objectives, new secondary objectives, mutated enemies like the Wretch and Crusher, SEAF platoons, 300 ranks, and a community challenge that runs through August 18.

That is why this cycle is stronger than the usual “premium drop goes live” brief. The game is selling three entry lanes at once:

The Warhammer 40,000 hook is clear now, and that helps

The July teaser version of this story was easy to kill because it still smelled like brand heat without enough player-useful detail. That part is gone now.

Xbox Wire’s Sony-authored August 7 post spells out what Castellan’s Creed actually is. The Warbond launched on August 12 and includes the R/40-K Hot-Shot Marksman Rifle, P/40-K Bolt Pistol, G/40-K Meltamine, the 40-K Meltagun Stratagem, armor sets, capes and banners, a vehicle pattern, and the Still Standing title.

It also gives the spending rule cleanly: the Warbond can be unlocked with 1500 Super Credits, whether you find them in-game or buy them separately, and then redeemed through medals earned in play.

That does not make the crossover good value for everyone. It does make it much easier to judge. If you mainly wanted more reasons to fight in the base game, Devoid of Liberty is the bigger deal. If you are already deep enough into Helldivers 2 to care about premium loadout flavor and obvious Warhammer cosplay, this is at least a transparent ask instead of a vague one.

The Steam numbers say “alive,” not “fixed”

This is the part that needs restraint.

Steam still shows a huge active audience, and that matters. So does the all-language review total. A game does not casually sit at 1,155,187 reviews and 92,164 concurrent players without still having real reach. But those numbers are not a repair certificate.

The same packet that supports the comeback angle also carries the warning label. Recent review texture still includes bugs, optimization complaints, balance irritation, and the usual live-service arguments over premium friction. That mixed texture is exactly why the honest read here is “messy re-entry” instead of “problem solved.”

Helldivers 2 looks active, newly accessible, and culturally loud again. It does not look settled.

The clean buyer read on August 16

If you already subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium, this is the easiest Helldivers 2 sample point Sony has offered in a while. There is real value in letting the subscription do the risky part for you while the game throws a big content update and a visible player wave into the same week.

If you are on Steam, the value proposition is still more conditional. The current $29.99 sale price is easier to swallow than $39.99, and the player count proves the game is still drawing a crowd. But a crowded live-service weekend is not the same thing as a clean technical endorsement.

So the sharp August 16 read is this:

That is still a strong story. It is just not a victory lap.

The free side of this pitch is not tiny. Devoid of Liberty adds new Void operations, new objectives, and another excuse for lapsed squads to check back in.

Arrowhead is also selling escalation: new mutated enemies, SEAF support, 300 ranks, and a community challenge that runs through August 18.

The paid side is much clearer than a vague tease now. Castellan's Creed is live, costs 1500 Super Credits to unlock, and is built around overt Warhammer 40,000 fan service.
