GTA VI pre-downloads on PS5 begin November 10 at local midnight for preorders, according to Sony. Its preparation advice is to clear at least 212GB. That number is a free-space requirement in the announcement, not our measurement of the download or final installation. Launch remains November 19, 2026.
The useful task now is making room. Preloading does not grant early play, and an external USB drive is not a way to run a PS5 game directly. Those distinctions matter more for preparation than another edition comparison.
What to put on the calendar
Sony’s November 3 announcement supplies the timing and minimum space guidance. The U.S. PlayStation Store, checked again November 4 UTC, separately lists a nine-day preload for both Standard and Ultimate. Preload is therefore not an Ultimate-only perk in that store. This is a PS5 guide, not confirmation of Xbox arrangements or disc-owner eligibility.
| Check | Sony’s published information |
|---|---|
| Pre-download | November 10, local midnight, for preorders |
| Free space to prepare | At least 212GB on PS5 |
| Launch | November 19, 2026 |
| U.S. digital editions | Both Standard and Ultimate list nine-day preload |
Do not turn local midnight into one worldwide UTC countdown. Nor should the 212GB advice be used to calculate an exact transfer time: the checked sources do not establish final download size or day-one patch requirements.
USB can free space, but storage is not playback
Sony’s USB support guide says you can move older PS5 games to USB extended storage to free console space. To play those games again, copy their data back to console storage. PS4 games can run directly from USB; that rule does not carry over to PS5 games.

This gives owners a preparation option without a new hardware purchase recommendation. It does not demonstrate that GTA VI can preload directly to USB. We have not tested the game, a drive or an installed build.
Our June preorder analysis left timing and size open. This follow-up answers the preparation questions Sony has now addressed, without turning minimum-space advice into a measured footprint. More platform coverage is in Console news. For now, clear the recommended space and keep the preload date separate from the day you can play.
