Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game is coming back in February 2027, and Renegade Game Studios has made the buying decision unusually clean. The Standard Edition carries a $100 MSRP and includes 42 unpainted miniatures. The Premium Painted Edition costs $200 and includes 42 pre-painted miniatures.
According to Renegade, both boxes have the same classic gameplay. So this is not a cheaper edition missing scenarios, heroes, or a rules module. It is a $100 question about whether you want to paint the figures yourself.
The same Ravenloft game, two different hobby commitments
Renegade describes the returning game as a cooperative dungeon crawl for one to five players. Players explore beneath Castle Ravenloft, fight monsters, deal with hazards, collect treasure, and eventually confront Strahd. The company lists 13 replayable thematic adventures, with each quest designed to take an hour or less.
The two official preorder pages list the same core contents: 40 interlocking dungeon tiles, 209 cards, 192 tokens, an Adventure Book, a rulebook, and a d20. Each version breaks its 42 figures into five heroes, 30 monsters, and seven villains.
That makes the split refreshingly blunt. The Standard box is the one for players who already enjoy painting, do not mind gray plastic, or simply want the game at the lower entry price. The Premium box is for groups that want the figures finished from the start and are willing to pay twice as much for that convenience.
What Renegade is updating, and what it is not
Castle Ravenloft originally released in 2010. Renegade says the new edition updates its artwork, logos, and graphic design to align more closely with the current Dungeons & Dragons presentation. It also says the game preserves the gameplay that made the original a modern classic.
That distinction matters. This is a revival with a refreshed presentation, not an announced redesign of the underlying Adventure System game. Buyers should not read the painted edition as a separate or upgraded rules experience: Renegade explicitly says both editions have the same classic gameplay.
The buyer read right now
There is no official new trailer attached to this announcement, and none is needed to understand the choice. Renegade’s product pages do the useful work: same cooperative dungeon crawl, same listed content, same February 2027 target, two miniature finishes.
- Choose Standard at $100 if unpainted miniatures are fine, or if painting is part of the appeal.
- Choose Premium Painted at $200 if getting all 42 figures table-ready matters more than the extra cost.
- Do not expect one edition to carry more game. Renegade says the gameplay is the same.
