ARCTICA has a real crowdfunding audience for an unusual proposition: build an Arctic ecosystem with rotating gears that determine when your animals become available. This Way announced an October 6 Gamefound launch. BackseatGamer’s October 10 report put the campaign above €373,000, with more than 2,500 backers.
Those are dated third-party figures, not independently verified Gamefound counters, delivered sales or evidence that the game is good. They do establish a reason to look beyond the animal art and ask two practical questions: what do the gears do, and what does the more expensive edition buy?
The gears are a timing system
This Way describes a competitive engine builder for one to four players, with a 75-minute estimate. Animal tokens travel through short- or long-generation wheels. Turning a gear advances them until they fall off and become available for the shared map.
That suggests a timing problem rather than a decorative moving board: what you set up now becomes usable later. Whether that delay feels satisfying or fiddly is a playtest question. GameGuideDog has not played ARCTICA; this is reported buyer coverage, not a firsthand review.

The publisher also describes simultaneous action selection. The active player rotates a central action wheel and takes both actions at its axis; everyone else takes one of those actions. Fauna cards cycle through columns when activated or used to reproduce, while end-of-round events alter the shared map.
The interesting announced combination is a personal engine with decisions that reach other players. It is worth checking the rules and official trailer to see whether that interaction is what your group wants. A mechanical hook and a funding audience cannot answer that for you.
€59 Standard or €119 Collector?
This Way’s September 30 reward update listed the Standard edition at €59 and Collector at €119. These are dated advertised pledge prices, not verified current checkout totals. Check today’s reward contents, shipping and tax treatment before paying.
Collector’s listed extras include two booster packs, upgraded wooden tokens and a thicker action board with magnetic wheels. The boosters add gameplay content, so this is not a purely cosmetic upgrade. The update says Standard buyers can obtain the booster and token upgrades separately. The useful comparison is therefore the complete package you want, rather than assuming the larger box is the default choice.

The €60 difference between the advertised tiers is only the starting comparison. Add any separately selected upgrades and the delivery costs applicable to your address before deciding. This article cannot establish a landed total or promise a fulfillment date.
Follow the mechanism, not just the funding total
ARCTICA is worth watching because its gear-based timing has a clear job in the announced design, and thousands of reported backers have already noticed the campaign. The funding snapshot does not settle rules clarity, component quality or long-term replay value.
For another component-versus-price comparison, read our Gothic pledge guide. Our Conan edition guide separates new content from larger bundles. More tabletop coverage is in board games.
The next useful step is to inspect the current rules and reward contents, then price the edition you actually want delivered. The wheels are the reason to investigate ARCTICA. They are not a reason to skip that check.
